Booking Manager’s Professional Skippers Online Booking programme allows agents to easily search, compare, and instantly book qualified skippers online, with Croatia Sailing Academy as its first partner, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and service quality across the charter industry.

Raising Standards in Nautical Tourism

In 2025, Booking Manager introduced its Professional Skippers Online Booking programme, bringing a new level of efficiency and transparency to the charter booking process. Through the Booking Manager Portal, agents can now easily search, compare, and select professional skippers based on detailed profiles that include photos, age, professional licences, sailing experience, short biographies, and languages spoken.

Taking the process a step further, agents can instantly book their preferred skipper in real time, streamlining one of the most important elements of the overall charter experience. By digitizing skipper selection and reservations, Booking Manager is helping charter operators and agencies provide greater confidence, consistency, and service quality to their clients.

The first organization to join the programme was Croatia Sailing Academy (CSA), which made more than 100 professionally trained skippers available for online booking. As one of Croatia's leading skipper education providers, CSA shares Booking Manager's commitment to raising industry standards and ensuring guests receive both expert navigation and exceptional onboard hospitality.

As the charter industry becomes increasingly digital, finding and booking the right skipper is evolving from a manual, time-consuming process into a seamless online experience. Behind every successful sailing holiday is a skipper who not only navigates safely but also creates memorable experiences for guests on board.    To learn more about the future of professional skipper services, we spoke Toni Brkić one of the people behind Croatia Sailing Academy (CSA), one of Croatia's leading skipper training institutions. Since its founding in 2018, CSA has focused on setting new industry standards through comprehensive education, practical training, and a strong emphasis on hospitality. Together with Booking Manager, CSA is helping shape the future of online skipper booking and professional crew management.

How was Croatia Sailing Academy founded?

Croatia Sailing Academy was established from a clear need for structured skipper education within the Croatian nautical market. From the beginning, we recognized that skipper training should go far beyond technical boat handling.  Being a skipper means delivering a complete experience, bringing together the yacht, the Adriatic Sea, nature, and, most importantly, the guest, into one unforgettable journey. In the past, the profession largely depended on individual enthusiasm, which often resulted in inconsistent service quality.  Our guiding vision has always been simple: to standardize skipper operations and elevate the profession to the highest possible level.

When was CSA established, and what market opportunity did you identify?

We were founded in 2018. At the time, the lack of clearly defined operational standards in the nautical sector represented both a significant opportunity and a responsibility.  We immediately began developing detailed operating standards for skippers and hostesses. These standards remain the foundation of all our training programs and crew education initiatives today.

What are the academy’s core values and mission?

Our mission is to provide people with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed for safe and responsible sailing while creating unforgettable experiences on the Adriatic.  These values are best summarized in our slogan:

Sail. Learn. Enjoy.

How is your skipper training program structured?

We offer several training programs, but our flagship course is the Professional Skipper Course, designed specifically for aspiring professional skippers.

The curriculum covers all essential technical competencies, including navigation, boat handling, maritime safety, and onboard troubleshooting. However, technical expertise is only the foundation.  What truly sets our program apart is our focus on hospitality and guest relations.  I often explain it this way: you can place an Olympic sailing champion on a yacht, but if they don't understand how to engage with guests, anticipate their needs, and create a welcoming atmosphere, the guests may still leave dissatisfied. They may have sailed faster than anyone else on the Adriatic, but they won't remember the experience fondly.

Which skills do you emphasize most during training?

We focus equally on two key pillars:

  • Technical Skills
  • Safe vessel handling
  • Navigation
  • Sailing proficiency
  • Hospitality Skills
  • Guest communication
  • Understanding client expectations
  • Delivering exceptional service

Without hospitality, even the strongest technical skills lose much of their value within the charter industry.

Is there a particular emphasis on communication and client relations?

Absolutely.

Hospitality and client relations are integrated into every aspect of our training programs. Our work doesn't stop once the sailing season ends. During the winter months, we provide additional education and workshops for skippers within our network, focusing exclusively on improving guest experience and communication skills.

Continuous education is essential. Just as elite athletes train every day despite already mastering their sport, professional skippers must continuously refine their people skills to maintain excellence.

In your opinion, what distinguishes an exceptional skipper from an average one?

In a single word: adaptability.

Every guest arrives with different expectations, habits, and preferences. An average skipper approaches every charter the same way. An exceptional skipper reads the guests, adapts to their needs, and creates an atmosphere that suits them perfectly.  When a skipper can successfully adapt to their guests, satisfaction naturally follows.

What benefits do charter companies and clients gain when hiring a skipper from CSA?

For charter companies and agencies, working with a CSA skipper provides a complete, hassle-free solution.  The key advantages include:

  • Guaranteed professional standards aligned with industry best practices and standards adopted by the Croatian Charter Association.
  • Complete logistics management, including communication with guests before and after the booking.
  • Legal and financial security, ensuring all skippers have valid licenses, documentation, and insurance coverage.
  • Professional crisis management and timely resolution of any operational challenges.

For most charter companies, sourcing skippers is not a core business activity. Yet the quality of the skipper has a major impact on the client's overall experience. That's why we believe this responsibility is best handled by specialists.

How did the partnership with Booking Manager and the development of the first online professional skipper booking portal come about?

The partnership developed naturally because we recognized in each other the qualities that define a strong business relationship: trust, professionalism, and shared values.  You can have the most detailed contract in the world, but if the people behind the partnership are not aligned professionally and personally, success is difficult to achieve.

With the Booking Manager team, we found a reliable partner who shares our commitment to quality and innovation

How do you see the future of the skipper profession and the process of finding the ideal skipper for a charter?

The future belongs to flexibility.  The professionals who can adapt most effectively to changing guest expectations will be the most successful. We are already seeing charter durations shift from the traditional seven-day format to shorter trips lasting three to five days.  In this faster, more dynamic environment, digital platforms and instant access to qualified skippers will become increasingly important

Do you believe online booking is the natural direction for the market?

Absolutely.

In fact, I would argue that the nautical tourism sector has been somewhat behind other areas of tourism when it comes to crew sourcing and reservations. Online booking is not only a natural evolution - it is the inevitable future of the industry.

The modern charter experience depends on far more than sailing expertise. Today's guests expect professionalism, flexibility, and exceptional service throughout their journey. Croatia Sailing Academy has built its reputation on preparing skippers to meet those expectations through a unique combination of technical excellence and hospitality training.

As charter operations continue to digitalize, the collaboration between Croatia Sailing Academy and Booking Manager represents an important step forward for the industry. By connecting qualified professionals with charter operators through a streamlined online booking process, they are helping raise standards, simplify operations, and ensure better experiences for guests across the Adriatic.  The future of skipper recruitment is digital, professional, and guest-focused, and it has already begun.
